Ali G

Parodic Afro-Caribbean would-be rapper and cultural icon, interviewer of the internationally rich, famous and totally gullible. The early interview with GK Galbraith was perhaps the most extraordinary of all that I remember. What stupidity level would the interviewer have needed to achieve for this distinguished academic and statesman to say "You are clearly having me on, I'm outta here". Painfully funny but also truly extraordinary in its insight on the power of TV as a medium for many of those held within its "gaze". At least prior to Ali G bursting the bubble, as I assume he has to some degree by now.

I really put this page up just to point out that even this name is a Clublet Name. Maximum Respect to whoever designed this system. But how about a further much-needed digression into the English popular culture at this point?

Ali G's superb interview of David And Victoria Beckham for Comic Relief was one of the highlights of the last year on television for this fervent Christian/couch potato. It ranked number two for the voters on Channel 4's top hundred moments during the holiday period, just beating David Beckham's free kick that got England to the World Cup by the skin of our teeth. That's some kind of double, given that the top moment was our beating German 5-1 in Munich, where Beckham of course was the magnificent captain. (Either we're all mad about football or there is deep significance of this tumultous world event in the heart of Bavaria. Probably both, to this fervent potato.) Some of the sexual innuendoes in the interview I suppose I wasn't meant to understand and quite possibly I didn't, at least officially. But it remains a cherished memory. Oh well.

Conspiracy possibilities to consider

His real name? Sacha Baron Cohen isn't it? Or something even more Jewish than that. We need to know. He might edit Why. In fact he might already have been asking some of his apparently serious but idiot-making-after-the-event questions here, to make us the whole Why Community look stupid, with all proceeds going to Comic Relief. It's worth serious consideration I say.
