I'm puzzled by Drews' argument as reported. I don't mean to seem like I'm trying to skirt around reading the actual book, which I hope to do soon, but I wonder in the meantime if someone knows off the top of their head the ways in which he'd dispose of these questions:

1. I'm a bit perplexed at the contrast Drews' theory is said to be drawing between chariot warfare and classical Greco-Roman warfare. Surely the role of chariot archers was operationally much like that of horse archers in later eras, to "shoot and scoot" and harass / demoralize the enemy (and provide protection for the infantry)? When armies were "built around" the chariot, wasn't it usually the heavy shock chariot, as in the case of the Hittites, and not chariot archers?

2. The theory that the chariot archer was rendered obsolete by swarming skirmishers seems very odd. Weren't chariots frequently accompanied by skirmishers / rearguards of their own? Or when peeling away from such support units to execute fast fire-and-wheel attacks on the enemy, wouldn't they have been moving too fast for skirmishers to swarm them? Wouldn't their support units also have had access to the Naue II sword? Why would the heavy chariot survive the adoption of such tactics instead of the chariot archer, since heavy chariots actually were required to close with the enemy? Why is it preferable to explain the greater longevity of the heavy shock chariot via the Naue II sword's effects on the chariot archer instead of appealing to, say, the fortunes of heavy versus light chariots in clashes like the Battle of Kadesh?

3. Is this single military tactic really being asked to do all the work of explaining the collapse of the Bronze Age civilizations? Does Drews feel that something specifically rules out the possibility that the chariot armies faltered after the urban economies supporting them faltered, rather than before? Historically, it seems to me that tactical innovations (assuming the correctness of the "skirmisher swarm" explanation) can only have such a dramatic effect if the enemy has already been deprived of the means, resources and will to adapt their own tactics in response. -- Bob Dobolina

Could anyone please tell me the connection between the Crook family and the Stephen family. Melvyn claims Annie Crook and James Stephen are related by marriage. Her mother Sarah Ann Dryden married William Crook whose mother was a stephen, in fact she was sister of James Stephen's grandfather.

I can tell you that William Crook was born in Eton Windsor in 1830 to William Crook and Sarah Quarterman. A fact that Ellen May Lackner vaguely touch on on Page 149 of the Ripper and Royals when she mentioned other family names were Quartermain.

No marriage have ever been found for William Crook to Sarah Anne Dryden but neither of them can been found on the 1861 census.

The problem is the term 'conspiracy theory'. Forget about that. Forget about lizard men and ufos and arcane discussions amounting to 'how many angels can dance on the head of a pin', all that is nonsense.
 The term 'conspiracy theory' becomes a useful tool in scoffing at legitimate facts or enquiry said at any time eg; circa late 1940's;

It does not matter whether people believe they are doing things for good or evil reasons either. Hitler thought he was doing all he could for the good of Germany and so did Himmler who was helping his master.

 No doubt people who were warning of concentration camps were labelled 'conspiracy nuts' and then just labelled with appropriate stars or serial numbers.
There are things that you will never know with reference to Government policy which will always remain conjecture. However such facts as Denis Healy openly admitting that at the Bilderberg Group they discussed the need for a one world government is not 'hidden' - it is quite open, his interview is on youtube so it does not fall into the category of shadowy conspiracy theory. The desire of Governments politicians and business leaders for a global government has been around for a long time - and has been openly discussed - the 'theory' implies that this is not a fact - whenever it was tried before it was always, in the minds of its proponents, a noble idea.Both Hitler and Stalin believed that they were working for the greater good. Only if you are of a certain age you will realise this - or if you are from a country where you have directly experienced it - of which, by your discuission I take it that you are not.
