|    | | Founder and blackmailer-in-chief of P2. One of those life-long fascists who did his bit for the CIA and had no objection to spying for the Soviets as well when the money was right. At the end of the Second World War Gelli worked with a Croatian priest, Krunoslav Draganovic, to assist many Nazis escape justice and get to South America. Gelli himself has lived in Argentina for much of his life, to avoid the wrath of investigators and prosecutors of various kinds.
One of the truly classic things about the turnaround in Rome on the Death Of Roberto Calvi last week was the quote from Gelli, reported in both The Independent and The Guardian, which showed that he too had joined the Don't Know/Don't Care camp:
"Only God will be able to tell the truth."
The Catholic devotion expressed there by the 82 year old I found very moving.
Or was it the smirking that I found so disgusting?
One or the other I guess.
